With a few sprinkles and clouds and without its top returning runners the Syracuse University
Men’s cross-country team started its season Saturday with a win at Colgate..
Last year,
SU’s cross-country team was ranked number 1 in the Northeast Region and was the
ACC champion in its first year in the conference.
With
Martin Hehir, Reed Kamyszek, Max Straneva and Ryan Urie held out, former redshirt, and now sophomore Shawn
Wilson finished first in the race with a time of 20:38:80.

“When
crossing the finish line first I was relieved and my coach said if I don’t run
well today I have to shave my mullet off; but it looks like I’m keeping it,”
Wilson said.
The goal Wilson is making for himself is to make it to the Nationals team and ACC team when his team gets there. “As a redshirt you are on the team, but you’re also separate, it was a great feeling to run today,” Wilson said.

Trying to keep up with seniors and other returning runners is what he is going to do to get better and help the team out in the long run. With his first race completed, Wilson said his mindset hasn’t changed and he treats every day the same. “This morning I woke up like it was a normal day; ate some toast, bacon and eggs and now I’m here.”
Coach Chris Fox
said he was happy with his team results to start the season off strong. “We are looking forward to get top 15 on the
women’s side and top 10 for the men,” said Fox.
“Our top runners are training hard and they won’t be running until the
end of the month."
“For us this is always a rust buster, so I am not expecting much yet,” said Colgate’s Men’s Coach Luke Burdick. Colgate did not hold back any of its top runners.

Even with the cloudy and chilly
weather the men’s team still pulled through and dug deep with their spikes to
win with a total of 17 points while Colgate had 56 points. The average team time was 20:41:28.
The next meet is Saturday September 13 for the Harry Groves Spiked Shoe Invitational at Penn State. Both men's and women's team will be there.
