Syracuse Men's Rowing Gets One - 2V Boat Defeats Wisconsin

Syracuse men's 2V boat secured the team's only win
Ithaca, N.Y. -- The No.14 Syracuse University Mens Rowing hit the water Saturday morning for the spring opener after months of relying on rowing machines and weight rooms. But the Orange had to travel an hour south to find rowable water conditions.

SU took on the No. 11 Wisconsin Badgers at the Cayuga Lake Inlet - Cornell's home course.

Wisconsin's Varsity Eight took the Orange by 2/3rds of a length.

The Oranges Second Varsity Eight out-rowed the Badgers by just over a length (three seconds) to secure the teams only victory of the day.

The guys were excited, head coach Dave Reischman said.  Theyve been on a rowing machine for the last three months and the guys are just excited to be outside and moving. I thought a good opening effort for us. Wisco is traditionally a very strong team, theyre ranked three ahead of us and to be within 2.3 seconds in the varsity (was a good performamnce) and I thought the JV had an excellent go down the race course.

While they've met many times over the years at the Eastern Sprints and the IRA Regatta, this was the first time Syracuse and Wisconsin have met in dual competition.

Originally sat as a home race for Syracuse, the Orange had decided to move the event to Ithaca when wind blew ice onto the SU course, shortening the available racing distance throughout the week. When the Saturday forecast called for strong wind that cinched it.

Back at SU's home course in Liverpool, Saturday morning, Onondaga Lake still had a large ice mass and even the channel in front of the boathouse had whitecaps  because of strong winds.

On the Water

Syracuse and Wisconsin went head-to-head three times, then the Orange fourth varsity eight faced Cornell in the final event of the day. The first varsity eight boats kicked things off with Badgers leading the Orange for much of the race after opening a length at about the halfway point. The Orange gained a few seats back, but Wisconsin closed the race strong to clock 5:59.9. The Orange finished in 6:02.1.

When we got to the 500 meter mark, we were pretty much level and thats kind of when we knew we were in it and wanted to give it our best shot, coxswain Christian Mund said. As we got to the 750 mark we put on a press and hung on to them.

Roughly 20 minutes after the Oranges first, race Syracuse 2V8 boat defeated Wisconsin.
SU powered away from the Badgers around the 1,000 meter mark and finished in 6:13.9, while Wisconsin completed the race in 6:17.9.

Wisconsin dominated the 3rd varsity race. The Badgers 3V, which is, in fact the freshman eight beat the Orange by almost 10 seconds finishing the two-kilometer race in 6:10.3 while Syracuse crossed the finish line in 6:19.9.

Wisconsin travelled to Central New York with only three crews. Cornell jumped in at the last minute to race the Orange fourth varsity. The Big Red jumped off the starting line and won easily.

The heavyweight eights alternated races with Cornell's lightweight crews who rowed against Princeton in five races.

I know for Wisconsin and us, getting a full 2K in early in the season is important so were glad it worked out, Reischman said.

Next Week

The Orange crews take on Navy and Cornell at home next Saturday, April 18, for the Goes Trophy. Racing begins at 8 a.m. The course is expected to be rowable by then.
