ONONDAGA, N.Y. – In front of a crowd of shivering fans sporting rain gear and holding umbrellas,
the Sauquoit Valley Indians weathered the misty winds and got another shutout win Monday night to become Class C baseball champions of Section III.
Just Saturday the Indians (13-6) had grabbed a 2-0 win
over top-seeded and previously unbeaten Fabius-Pompey in the Class C semifinals. Monday the team
arrived at Onondaga Community College stadium determined to remain on top, and close
out the final against Pulaski.
“[Winning] sends a big message that we’re for real and they better watch
out,” pitcher Kory Lewandrowski said.
Pulaski (13-7) found out Lewandrowski was as good as his word. The Blue Devils fell to the Indians 7-0 in the championship.
“I’ve been a part of [a championship team before], my sophomore year,”
Lewandrowski said. “But [this win] feels really good. We did it with a good
group of guys and it feels great.”
The Indians took an early lead in the game Monday night, scoring a run in the top of the second inning and adding two more in the third. The Indians piled on four more in the fifth. Lewandrowski
allowed just two hits while striking out nine Blue Devils. Sauquoit Valley scored its seven runs on eight hits.
The Indians' winning streak throughout the Class C playoffs was unexpected. They were the underdogs, and entered the tournament as 12-seed
in the bracket.
Now, the road to winning continues for Sauquoit. The Indians will face
off against the Section IV winner, Tioga, in the state playoffs.
