Women's Soccer: Florida State and Syracuse finish in a draw

SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- The teams scored relatively early but not often as the Syracuse and #2 Florida State women's teams finished in a 1-1 double-overtime draw at the SU Soccer Stadium on a cool Sunday afternoon.

"Today we played a very very good defensive team, Syracuse head coach Phil Wheddon said.
"I mean Florida State is #2 in the country for a reason, they're well coached, well organized, We've got to be a little bit more creative on attack."

Starting early

The Orange (7-5-3, O-4-2 ACC) got on the scoreboard in the first minute of play when junior forward Alex Lamontagne scored her first goal of the season.

24 minutes later, the Seminoles (9-2-2, 3-1-2) responded, when sophomore forward, Elin Jenson, also scored her first goal of the season.

And that was that for the scoring, although not for lack of trying by both offenses.

A goalkeeper's game

The Florida State offense kept pressure on junior goalkeeper Courtney Brosnan for the vast majority of the game, resulting in 27 shots and 15 saves for Brosnan.

"The number of shots on goal for Florida state talks about their efficiency about getting the ball on frame," Wheddon said.

15 saves is a new career-high and the second highest number of single game saves by a Syracuse goalie, behind Shannon Myers who had 17 saves at Princeton on Oct. 27, 2004.

"Courtney's been great for us all year. I've said all along that she's one of the best goalkeepers in the ACC," Wheddon said.

Both Wheedon and Brosnan explained that the choice for her to play was a game time decision. On Thursday against Virginia Tech, Brosnan suffered an injury and wasn't able to train Friday or Saturday.

Brosnan said she felt ready to go on Sunday, "pain is relative so obviously it hurts a little bit but it was fine."

Florida State  redshirt junior, Cassie Miller faced similar pressure in the goal. The Florida State defense did a lot to keep the ball out of the net, but Miller faced nine shots, resulting in three saves.

Wheddon was proud that his team could put that kind of pressure on Miller, "getting a point against the #2 team in the country is massive," he said.

Up next

Syracuse will continue ACC play on Sunday Oct. 16 at 1 p.m. when it hosts Pittsburgh for the Alumni Game. The Seminoles will also stay in the ACC as they travel to NC State for a match on Saturday Oct. 15 at 3 p.m.
