SYRACUSE, N.Y.- Undefeated No. 3/3 Syracuse hosted winless Wagner Sunday afternoon in a non-conference matchup at the Carrier Dome. Kayla Treanor at the draw was key to Syracuse’s success against Loyola last weekend, and proved to be major again.
Treanor won all but two of the 16 draws she took for the Orange, grabbing twelve of them herself. Syracuse only won three of seven draws without Treanor taking them in the second half. The lost draws wouldn’t prove to be much of a blow, as Syracuse was already up 12-2.
Halle Majorana and Riley Donahue led the Orange in scoring with three goals and one assist each. Treanor took more of a quarterback position behind the cage, assisting on five goals while adding two of her own. Ten of Syracuse’s 16 goals were assisted and ten different players scored for the Orange, proving depth and strength in every midfield and attack line.
Wagner scoring was led by Shea Gegan who scored two goals and assisted on one. Both of Gegan’s goals were scored on free-positions. Three other players scored for Wagner, including one goal by Kimmy Tumolo, SU assistant coach Michelle Tumolo’s sister.
The Orange ride proved to be intense again this weekend. Wagner was only able to clear successfully seven of 19 times. Aggressive Syracuse caused 14 turnovers but with a price. The Orange tallied an overwhelming 41 fouls in the process. Syracuse showed an aggressive, high- pressure defense in which Wagner struggled with early on, shelving 16 turnovers in the first half.
Syracuse was nearly perfect in clearing the ball, successfully clearing ten of 12 times. In all three games thus far, the Orange has turned the ball over 16 times.
Allie Murray started in goal for the Orange, saving two of four shots. Bri Stahrr replaced Murray with early in the second half and saved two of the five shots against her. Wagner’s Kelsey Fee played the full 60 minutes, saving nine of 25 shots, several on spectacular stonings of point-blank shots by Syracuse..
Wagner Coach Katie Rowan is in her first year at Wagner after spending the last three seasons as an assistant at Syracuse. Rowan also played for the Orange and is the school’s all-time career leader in points and assists and was a three-time All-American.
With the win, Syracuse improves to 3-0 while Wagner drops to 0-2. Syracuse will host Marist lSunday evening at 7:30 in the Carrier Dome.
