Orange Cruises Past Marist, 16-5

Syracuse, N.Y. - After taking out Wagner 16-5 early Sunday, the Syracuse women's lacrosse team jumped out to an early lead in the nightcap of the doubleheader to take down Marist by the same score, 16-5, Sunday night in the Carrier Dome.

"Great day for lacrosse for Syracuse," said Syracuse women's lacrosse head coach Gary Gait. "Overall, top to bottom, I thought our team played pretty well. Great team effort."

Early Lead

The Orange (4-0) wasted no time getting on the board against the Red Foxes with Kayla Treanor putting her first goal of the game and seventh of the season in the back of the net just 13 seconds into the game.

Syracuse scored the first seven goals of the contest with Halle Majorana and Riley Donahue putting in two apiece. Treanor assisted on both of Majorana's goals. Majorana leads the Orange with 10 goals this season.

"That starting attack group has just been playing unbelievable this year," Gait said. "If you log the minutes they've played, that they've been on the field and what they do, its been amazing. Certainly been fun to watch."

Donahue led the team with four goals, all coming in the first 15 minutes of play. Two came off the free position, and she credited seeing the field well to her success.

"I guess I just saw opportunities to cut when I'm open," Donahue said. "Sometimes they'd turn their back and I'd just see the opportunity to go and I knew Kayla would be there to pass it. I just focused more no knowing where to shoot more this game.

"Riley got open a lot in both games, and it was just easy passes to her for her to finish," said Treanor, who finished with a game-high three assists.

The Orange led 13-1 at halftime at which point most of the starters were pulled for reserves. In all, 12 players scored for the Orange.

Second Half, Cruise City

With many of the starters pulled with the rout on, Syracuse continued to pour it on early in the second half. Less than a minute in, Taylor Poplawski found the back of the net to make it 14-1.

Kara McHugh scored her first of two goals eight minutes later to cut into the lead, but the Orange was just too much, adding two more goals shortly after.

In the final five minutes of the game, Marist put three more goals away to make it the 16-5 final.

Next

It gets a lot tougher for Syracuse next Sunday, Feb. 28 . While Orange women will play only one game, they'll host No. 4 Northwestern at noon at the Carrier Dome.
