Orange Hits the Turf Running: Syracuse Beats Loyola 17-6

SYRACUSE, N.Y. - The Syracuse Orange women started their season with a home game in the Carrier Dome against Loyola University of Maryland at noon on Sunday, and it was quickly lights out for the visitors from the Patriot League.  The No. 3/3 Orange offense was too much for the No. 13/12 Greyhounds' defense as Syracuse won 17-6.


First Half

Greyhounds junior midfield Emily Clark scored the first goal of the afternoon only 1:14 into the first half.  Less than one minute later Syracuse answered back with a goal by senior attack Halle Majorana off a free position to tie the game 1-1.

Loyola senior midfield Maddy Blakeman scored off an assist by Clark to give Loyola a 2-1 lead. But the Orange went on a 4-0 run to go up 5-2.  Loyola freshman midfield Taylor VanThof scored a goal off an assist by junior midfield Cami Whiteford to bring the Greyhounds within three before Loyola head coach Jen Adams took a timeout in an effort to stop the Orange momentum.It didn't work.

Syracuse goaltender Allie Murray saved her first goal of the game with 13:49 remaining in the first half.  The Orange went on a 5-0 run to close out the half taking an 11-3 lead.

Syracuse’s Majorana ended the half with four goals and senior attack Kayla Treanor scored three goals at the end of the first half.

Syracuse had seven free shot positions in the first half.

Second Half

Orange freshman midfield Emily Resnick scored 15 seconds into the second half with an assist by sophomore attack Riley Donahue to put the Orange up 12-3.

The Greyhounds scored their first goal in 30 minutes by redshirt freshman Sabrina Tabasso, assisted by Blakeman the Orange with a commanding 14-4 lead with 19:37 remaining in the game.

Key Notes

Syracuse’s Majorana finished with a game-high five goals and one assist and Treanor scored four goals and one assist.

Tabasso finished the game with two goals.

Syracuse won 22 of the 25 draws during the contest. 

Loyola had 14 turnovers and Syracuse had 16 turnovers, nine of which were caused turnovers.

Up Next

Syracuse plays the second game of a double-header against the Binghamton University Bearcats Sunday night at 7:30 p.m. in the Carrier Dome. Neither head coach Gary Gait nor players were available to reporters after the noon game.
