Problems with NBA Rules

The NBA 2018 Offseason

So this has been one of the craziest offseasons or NBA free agency periods we've been in a while. Especially with LeBron James leaving the Cleveland for the LA Lakers. I thought he would've stayed in Cleveland or possibly go to another team out east.

To me, The Warriors have a lock on the Western Conference. Even though LeBron has been to eight-straight NBA Finals, I'm not sure whether or not he'll be there again this year. The Warriors have only gotten even more dangerous signing DeMarcus Cousins.

I think Paul George deciding to stay in Oklahoma City with the Thunder was another shocker. Most people assumed he would be the one signing with the Lakers.

It was shocking to see the Raptors parting ways with DeMar DeRozan, seeing as he’s been one of their best (if not their best player) since Vince Carter.

We all knew Kawhi’s time in San Antonio was up, but I didn’t think the Spurs would trade Danny Green or let Tony Parker and let him sign with the Hornets. Green and Kawhi were both traded to the Raptors.

The Wizards have made a couple moves; signing Dwight Howard Jeff Green and Austin Rivers. I don't really know how that'll turn out for them, but I guess we'll have to wait for the NBA season to see.

Improving The Entertainment Value of MLB

The average age of an MLB fan is 55-years-old, the oldest across all four professional sports leagues in America. This is a problem for Major League Baseball as they question where their next generation of fans is coming from moving forward.

There’s two things that must be done to improve and appeal to this younger demographic.

One is marketing. You must market your superstars better. Mike Trout is a LeBron James cailber player in Major League Baseball and he’s nowhere close to branded as much. I don’t know how they’re going to do it and I’m not asking him to be marketing as LeBron James is because that’s literally impossible, but brand him better. Get him into some more ad campaigns, make him the ambassador for your league.

The second is pace of play. Pace of play was 2 hours and 30 minutes for an MLB game in 1970—it was 3 hours and 8 minutes last year in 2017. Get a pitch clock, 25 seconds per pitch and eliminate the replay delay—that can’t happen anymore.

Do those two things and Major League Baseball is going to see some success in appealing to a younger demographic.

Increasing WNBA Coverage

Audio Transcript-

So a common concern for the WNBA is increasing the revenue, which means increasing coverage, increasing number fans who come to the game, etc.
And so, in my opinion, the WNBA may wants to increase their coverage, the next team that they add to the league needs to be placed in an area where women's college basketball is really big i.e. South Carolina. South Carolina is number one in women's college basketball home attendance.

And so, if the league was to place a team in South Carolina, perhaps even have the team play in South Carolina's gym, they would attract all those fans.

So this is being done at the Atlanta Dream.  The Atlanta dream currently play at Georgia Tech Coliseum. Georgia tech is really not known for having a lot of fans, but the same could be practiced in South Carolina.

Those fans would be attracted to those games. The other thing is the WNBA is later after the college basketball season, and so when those fans don’t have college basketball to watch, they can go and watch WNBA teams.

I really think this needs to be implemented in the next team the WNBA decides to bring on.

Women in Professional Sports

Transcription:

Women’s sports are more often than not put on the back burner. Whether it’s lack of funding, lack of financial and social support, or maybe people just haven’t yet accepted women to be of caliber as professional athletes. This is a norm I hope to change, lucky for us it slowly is changing.

As an athlete that has competed on the world stage, I know what it’s like to have to self- fund to represent your country, or to not have complete coverage of a world event so your family or friends can watch from home. When we all know that if the tables were turned and if it were men who were playing in these events, the story would be written completely differently.

A few months ago the National Rugby League in Australia known as The NRL announced they were adding a professional women’s league to their organization. This is the second major sport in Australia to do so in the past few years, the first was Australian Rules Football league. AFL is the main sport in Australia. Football and Rugby are very male dominated sports where people are willing to give money, support, give their time, attention to and they’ve never associated this professionalism with woman. They’re the only two professional sports really that the nation as a whole pays attention to. I think that in the past few years, adding these professional leagues is paving a pathway that woman can be professional athletes. Although it’s small, they don’t have as much  funding as the men, they don’t have as much support as the men, everything has to start off small and this is a great way to start.

Some people may see this news and not blink an eye. But this is a big deal for woman in sports. These moves are acknowledging women as proper, actual athletes. people are seeing that woman can compete on a professional stage and it is entertaining. They are extraordinary, they do work just as hard as any other athlete, it doesn’t depend on their gender.

Growing up as a little girl playing lacrosse, I never thought there would be an opportunity to play at a professional level. As I came up the ranks in college I saw that, wow, this could be a reality for me one day.

Here in the united states, Professional women’s lacrosse is a few years deep and the effect it’s having on young lacrosse girls is incredible.  You can see a direct effect when you watch them watch professional players and know that it is a reality and The professional players are focusing on building strong women who empower other woman that they belong and that their worth as a player and an athlete doesn’t rely on their gender, it relies on their hard work and integrity.

I feel that as these programs keep growing and as there’s more publicity and more money and advertising and backing thrown into these programs, that it can only be better for woman in sports. People will get more exposure to the hard work, the athletic abilities of these woman. They will see that woman do belong on the big stage just as much as men, and this will happen.
