Chasing a dream and paving the way for those who come after: An interview with Sharif King

Newhouse graduate student Sharif King may seem like your typical student chasing his dream. But for King, grad school is much more.

King, the eldest of six, bounced around between Harlem and the Bronx during his childhood, spending the majority of his time with his grandmother. He would then go on to be the first in his immediate family to earn a bachelor’s degree.

After graduating from SUNY Old Westbury, King was offered a full-time on-air talent position at a radio station in Cincinnati, Ohio.  He was making a name for himself in a place unlike he had ever experienced. Two years into his stint in Cincinnati, he was laid off.

His return home, though sudden and unexpected, would result in a chance for King to help others by becoming a youth advisor in the Bronx.

Sharif King is a graduate student at Newhouse studying broadcast and digital journalism

“You notice that in New York City, a lot of kids don’t even get off their block,” King said. “It’s important for them to know you can go further.”

King is still inspiring the youth as he continues to break through obstacles on his path to a brighter future.
