Brady Williams, SYRACUSE, N.Y.- Sports have been a part of Mitch Bannon’s life ever since he
was a toddler. Playing hockey from the time he was three years old, he carried
the passion his father instilled in him all throughout his youth. Over time he
developed an affinity for baseball that culminated in his first sports writing
experience in high school.
Bannon realized that he had a knack for fantasy baseball,
and with the help of his teachers who identified his talent for writing, he began
writing analyses of some of the best players in Major League Baseball. He started
honing his skills with small blog posts and by writing for his school paper
before changing focus when college arrived.
Mitch completed four years of a history and political science
degree; however, halfway through his undergraduate stories, he knew he needed
to return to sports writing. In his second year, he couldn’t resist taking
courses like baseball history and set his mind on journalism. By the time
summer arrived last year, he learned where he wanted to go.
Bannon and his father were visiting Cooperstown when they met
one of the owners of the Syracuse Mets. He relayed his passion for sports journalism
when the baseball insider told him about Syracuse University’s Newhouse School.
As the Mets’ owner explained the prestige the program held, Mitch set his mind
on getting his master’s degree in Syracuse, New York.
That very night he
intended to apply, and a few months later, he was accepted. Now, he’s three
weeks into the magazine, newspaper, and online sports program, and he’s ready
to finally make a living doing what he loves.
