Maria Trivelpiece: Walk-on to Captain

Stopping is not an option for Maria Trivelpiece.  As a walk-on to Fordham University's softball team, she was driven to earn a starting position.  She did that and more.

Her efforts were rewarded with a scholarship, a place in the starting lineup and a vote of confidence from her teammates by being selected as a captain as a senior.

"I got my Cinderella story a little bit", she says when speaking about her improbable rise from walk-on to captain.  "Not as fast as I would've hoped but it was really great."

While working her way up the ranks on the diamond, she gained valuable experience in high pressure situations away from the playing field as a reporter for Fordham's WFUV, preparing radio wraps while on subway rides in New York City to meet deadlines.

Though her time as a softball player has come to an end, she has continued her love for sports by making the move west to attend Syracuse University.  She is pursuing a career that is close to the field, but just outside the white lines, as a sideline reporter and analyst.

When asked about her goals, she says, "I would love to be an analyst, which I know isn't very probable."  Fordham alum Vin Scully famously said after Kirk Gibson's walk-off home run in game one of the 1988 World Series, "In a year that has been so improbable, the impossible has happened."  It may not be a walk-off in October, but this former walk-on is ready to do the improbable.
