Industry Professional Interview: Gregg Mace

Joe Trently, SYRACUSE, N.Y.-  I chose to do my professional interview with Gregg Mace. Gregg is currently the Sports Director at ABC27 News in Harrisburg, PA. Gregg is a Syracuse graduate, and has been working in the industry for over 40 years.

Gregg first got his start at KHAS radio station in Nebraska. Coming out of college, he knew he wanted to get into this industry, but not because of the reason that most of our concentration thinks. Gregg was always fascinated by the technical equipment (cameras, microphones, lights, etc.) He says that is what he thinks separated himself from others as well as being able to adapt to certain manager’s styles. He preached that that was probably the toughest challenge he faced, but he believes learning to adapt made him more valuable.

As far as role models go that inspired Gregg to get into the business, he was adamant in answering with the name Vince Bagli. Vince Bagli worked at WBAL in Baltimore. Gregg even stated that when he was seven years old, he saw Bagli at a restaurant, and he was too afraid to go up to him because he was too shy, even though Bagli was his hero. On the sports side of things, he tried to model his play calling after both Marv Albert, and Bob Costas. Gregg has just reached his 40th anniversary at ABC27, and prides himself on working the best he can to please the community.
