Marc Carig on the world of baseball beat writing
On his way to Citi Field to cover
the Mets, Marc Carig, the national baseball writer for The Athletic, shared
insight into the innerworkings of baseball beat writing.
He discussed social
media and the key takeaway of never-before experienced feedback into what
readers are looking for and learning from comments rather than ignoring them.
It was when we got
to the topic of role models that got him tapping into his own journalistic
philosophy and the importance of being curious and a constant learner. Carig’s colleague
Ken Rosenthal is at the top of his list when it comes to role models.
According to
Carig, Rosenthal exemplifies what a baseball writer and journalist should be in
his commitment to asking questions and learning new things each day. In
addition to Ken Rosenthal, who he says has been “incredible” to work alongside,
Carig says he is lucky to work with a talented team of editors, producers and
writers at The Athletic. The team, the freedom to find his own stories and the
opportunity to work with Rosenthal were all major factors in his decision to
join the burgeoning sports website.
“I’m a big
believer in surrounding yourself with quality people,” he said.
