Uncensored: Scopus Buthuel

Guya Scopus Bethuel
By Alyssa Lyons

Guya Scopus Bethuel  has always wanted one thing, the ability to communicate.
As simple as the word may be, it does not come that way in South Sudan.
There, mainstream media does not cover the government, it can’t, unless
your willing to put your life on the line.

In South Sudan, you “censor yourself from covering certain articles and
stories, or you simply move out of the profession,” Said Buthuel.
Why? “Because no story is worth your life.”

But Bethuel had a mission, not one he was willing to give up. He found
another way to tell a story, he found his solace, in the passion the Sudan
people have for soccer. After receiving his undergraduate degree from
Uganda in Mass Communications, Buthuel returned to his home country to
work for a newspaper who had recently launched a radio station to analyze and
debate the European and Butler’s Premier Leagues. Every Saturday Buthuel
would invite panelists to the radio show, have fans phone in and ask questions.

Guya Scopus Bethuel came to S.I. Newhouse
at Syracuse to improve so that he may share his stories with a
grander platform, to travel around Africa and Europe profiling and
reporting sports stories to break the barrier of communication in his country.
