A Coach of the Craft
An educator, a sports journalist, and a coach. Many may think that a coach is just for sporting teams, but this is not true for Professor Herm Card. Card, a Syracuse baseball alum, was a student of the game for many years as he coached and played at Syracuse University and, in the minor leagues. Now an educator and professor of sports journalism, Card considers himself a coach of the craft. One of his favorite quotes from Baseball Hall of famer Honus Wagner reads “Ain’t much to being a ballplayer… if you’re a ballplayer.” Card believes the meaning of this quote to be true for journalists too. The philosophy that Card lives by when mentoring his students is based on refining and growing the journalistic instincts and skills that one already possesses. Card is trying to bring out a quality of excellence from his students to help them become successful journalists who tell meaningful stories. “I’m not trying to teach people anything new, I’m trying to help them develop their inner qualities they already have. I can refine what they already have," said Card. Professor Card coaches aspiring sport journalists through his athletic instinct, knowledge, and wide range of experience.
