Photo Essay: Kind Words for Tom Leo

"Usually the Hall of Fame is for players and maybe a broadcaster or something, not a scorekeeper. He [Tom Leo] made a difference," said Donnie Baseball who worked with Leo for years.

Tom Leo was inducted into the Syracuse Baseball Wall of Fame class for 2018 last week.

Leo worked at the Syracuse Newspapers for 29 years mainly covering Syracuse University football and the Syracuse Chiefs. But, Donnie Baseball mainly knew him as the scorekeeper.

"He would always show up 1.5 hours before the game. He would just relax. He would come in at the last minute, he was really good about that."

Hearing about all Leo did, it's very clear he loved the game of baseball and shared that with the Syracuse community. Leo volunteered as a coach for North Syracuse Babe Ruth little league team for many years. He also participated in the Men's Senior Baseball League (MSBL) where he pitched and played shortstop.

Donnie baseball mostly remembers Leo for sticking to his guns when pitchers called after game day wining about an earned run. "He would say, 'No, I'm not gone sit here and change that!'"

It is too sad cancer took Tom Leo all too soon, otherwise Donnie Baseball is sure he would still be keeping the score.
