Sundays versus Sundaes: The two loves of John Heineke
John Heineke has two main passions in life: church and ice cream. Heineke decided about twelve years ago that he wanted to make a change. He was working as a farmer at the time but he said he felt that was no longer the right path for him.
"Not to sound cheesy but I sort of felt God calling to me," Heineke said. "I knew then that I wanted to become a pastor."
Heineke is a pastor at New Beginnings church in Wampsville, New York.
In addition to finding his calling as a pastor, Heineke also found a very different calling: to become an ice cream taster. Heineke admits that he has a weak spot for Perry's ice cream. Perry's was started in Heineke's hometown of Akron, New York
Heineke has such an obsession with Perry's ice cream that he once traded mortgage payments on a house for free ice cream samples of Perry's.
Heineke also is a big Syracuse Chiefs baseball fan. He said he loves the atmosphere at the ballpark and he loves to come whenever possible with a group of guy friends to cheer on the Chiefs.
