In your life, the things that define you are your choices. Choosing A instead of B will bring you down a path, that for better or for worse you cannot come back from. Choices change you, they make you who you are and dictate what you achieve in life.
For Professor Herm Card his choices have lead him to living much of his life in Central New York. Apart from geography the choices he has made have lead him success as a Baseball Player, a Coach, an Umpire, a Soldier, an Educator, a Poet, a Photographer, a Husband, a Father and a Grand Father.
Throughout his life, Mr. Card has worn hats but to him it is not the jobs he has had that make him who he is it is the choices he has made that do.
Professor Card is famous among generations of Newhouse Students for saying the phrase “sports matter” and I think that’s true. Sports tap into the very best of us, they teach us lessons we can learn nowhere else.
But, if speaking to Herm Card on a cloudy July evening in a press box next to a noisy Coke machine taught me one thing its that yea, sports do matter but our choices matter more.
