Pedro Severino (Chiefs) hitting against pitcher Justin Haley (Red Sox) in the bottom of the 6th (c) 2018 Jose Lara
Coming of a 3-4 road trip, from which they played those 7 games in 5 days, the exhausted Syracuse Chiefs looked like they had already given up their 1st of a 4 game series against the Pawtucket Red Sox. Down 7-0 after 3 and a half innings, with 2 out, bases empty, full count, for many just another meaningless at bat for what it is a long regular season.
But 25 year old, Dominican Republic Catcher Pedro Severino isn't like most of us. He crushed a ball to the right field bleachers for his 4th Home Run of the season, and made the score 7-1. Even though it was still a big deficit what that did was inspire the team into not giving up and believing a comeback was possible.
"It was a full count, he (Haley) left a pitch right through the middle and I gave it my best swing at it" said Severino after the game. "The game doesn't end until the 27th out is made, so we just did our best to keep ourselves in the game"
After that Home Run the Syracuse Chiefs scored in the next 4 innings, finally tying the game in the bottom of the eight, and afterwards winning it in 13th with a score of 11-10.
"We have to give our 100% in every game and make our best to go through" said Severino with a smile in his face when the game had ended.
Although Pedro Severino went 2 for 6 in the game with 2 strikeouts and 4 runners left on base, the people that watched the whole game from NBT Bank Stadium know that Severino was clutch. With that in mind it's a fact that without his Home Run they don't turn the game around. Without that "meaningless at bat" the Syracuse Chiefs don't make that legendary comeback.
