Humanizing Journalism One Department at a Time: Jason Murray

After Jason Murray came to terms with knowing that he would never be the point guard for the Lakers, he decided to chase his passion for sports in a different way. Journalism. Murray said it was never his mission in life to go into sports journalism, nor did he grow up as a big journalism fan. However, when reality sank in, he decided to find jobs that would get him into and onto the field.

When Murray settled into college, he pursued a communications major and ended up working as a copy writer for Bank of America. After trying out for a full-time position after an internship at The , he was supposed to take on a news copying job. Last minute, he was offered a sports editing job, and the rest is history. Murray now manages the sports department for the Syracuse Media Group.

One piece of advice that Murray would give to people who want to follow in his similar footsteps is to understand how to deal with people. He acknowledges the amount of technical and writing skills needed for the position, but he further emphasizes that understanding people and relating to them on a human level is most critical for the job.

Murray has not thought about leaving his current position, but would consider pursuing a sports editor position for a larger publication after his daughter graduates from college.
