Begin asking who
is Scooch rather than what is Scooch.
Seen alongside Pops at Syracuse Chiefs baseball games, Scooch is more than a
furry orange creature with crazy eyes.
Under the thick orange skin is 21-year-old Kevin Romer. Starting
off his mascot career as Syracuse Crunch’s Tully the Turtle, Romer has been a
dedicated Chiefs mascot for three years. Straight out of high school and partly
because of a joke he had with his friends, Romer put on the suit and became a
part of the team.
He said he has always taken a liking to mascots. Even when
he was younger, Romer was never afraid of them. He loves his job because he
likes interacting with children, making them smile, and throwing popcorn and
cotton candy at people, along with other crazy antics.
As a mascot, there are rules to follow. Romer said he is not
allowed to talk and has to keep the head on at all times. The most difficult
thing for him is trying to see through the mask.
Although he has a lot of fun, Romer has stated that this
will not be his forever job, and he plans to go back to school in the future.
Thank you Romer for your dedication to the Chiefs and for your
wild dance moves.
