Telling Stories through Sports

Only a few years out of school, Steve Raum has found himself working an important position at Sports Illustrated producing feature stories. From preproduction to releasing the final product, Raum is responsible for everything that goes into his final product. And this, he says, is part of what makes his job so fulfilling. Not any singular aspect of the project, like editing, but creating something and having his hands in its development and seeing it through until the end is the best part of the job.

As someone who got into the field in order to tell cool, interesting stories about the athletes that so many of us idolize, Raum is in just the right place. Despite turnaround times that range anywhere from three months for a project on someone like Saquon Barkley to only two weeks for one on DeAndre Ayton making it difficult to get a feel for a real schedule, the job is worth it.

This is especially true when meeting incredibly famous players, and realizing they are just regular people, too. Doing this and having the power to change the portrayal of a player in the media, especially for the better, keeps his job interesting. While talking to Raum, it sincerely felt like he was doing the exact work that is right for him.
